Phillies say the word risk, but dont take one.

The Phillies did what they do best yesterday. They added a scrap-heap, spare-part and will now hope that Scott Eyre preforms "to the way we (the Phillies) think he can." Yesterday on the Mike Gill Show, I spoke to Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle. He mentioned the word "risk" and I was almost surprised someone in the Phillies organization knew how to even pronounce that word.

While the trade deadline may not have been active, there were risk-taking moves by other NL contenders that helped their fan base at least have a feeling that those teams are going for it. Milwaukee got the ball rolling by adding stud southpaw CC Sabathia. Sabathia has dominated NL hitters, going 5-0 with an ERA of 1.88 and a sparkling WHIP of 0.958. The the leagues best team, the Chicago Cubs, went out and acquired Rich Harden from the Oakland A's. Harden has had injury problems in the past and Arbuckle even admitted to me that was an issue. His numbers since joining the Cubs and facing Senior Circuit hitters; 1-1 with an ERA of 2.10 and a 1.033 WHIP in five games.

The Dodgers took a different approach to the work risk, but adding a major bat to the middle of their line-up; Manny Ramirez. You might think the Phillies have place to play him or that they don't need another bat - wrong. As I watched the Phillies bat go as silent as 20,000 on-lookers for a Tiger Woods put on the 18th green yesterday, it made me realize even more that Manny could have been Manny here. In LA, Manny his hitting .565 with four home runs and nine RBI in less then a week with the Dodgers. His on-base percentage is a staggering .615, don't you think that is something the Phillies could use after watching Chris Volstad dominate them yesterday afternoon.

As for Eyre, yeah he is a shot in the dark, but his 2-0, 7.11 ERA are a piece of duct-tape to a team that has glaring needs elsewhere. An extra lefty is a luxury that is nice to have, a bat like Manny or arms like Sabathia or Harden are risks that the the Phils just weren't willing to take.

Should The Sixers Trade Iguodala?

The Sixers have been one of the NBA’s best off season stories. On July 9th, 2008 the Sixers signed former Los Angeles Clipper Elton Brand to a five-year, $79-million contract. In inking Brand, they got a guy who has averaged 20.3 points, 10.4 rebounds (4.0 being offensive rebounds) and 2.00 blocks in his career.

In Brand, the Sixers finally may have found the power forward they have been looking for since Charles Barkley took his 14,184 points, 7,079 rebounds and .576 field-goal percentage to Phoenix back in 1992. Since then guys like Tim Perry, Scott Williams, Tony Massenburg, Richard Dumas, Ed Pickney, Adrian Caldwell, Derrick Coleman (twice), Terry Cummings, Harvey Grant, Tyrone Hill, Rick Mahorn (a second time), Kenny Thomas, Joe Smith and Chris Webber all tried to but probably combined didn’t put together numbers to match Sir Charles eight seasons in Philly.

This offseason the Sixers also landed an outside shooter by signing former Indiana Pacer Kareem Rush. Rush scored 8.3 points per game last season off the bench, while hitting nearly 39-percent of this three-point shots. Royal Ivey, was brought in to be a defensive minded point guard and spell Andre Miller at times during the game. In 19 minutes per game last season in Milwaukee, Ivey scored a career best 5.9 points per game.

These off season pieces will be added to a very young core of players that includes last years top draft pick Thaddeus Young, the enigma that is Samuel Dalembert, Louis Williams (who just inked a five-year $25 million deal) and Jason Smith. Add in veteran point guard Andre Miller, banger Reggie Evans and Willie Greene and optimism is high in Philadelphia for the first time since the 2001-2002 season.

The one name that hasn’t been mentioned yet could very well be their best all-around player; Andre Iguodala.

The Sixers offered Iguodala a $57 million deal last season that he decided to turn down. Many NBA experts could not understand this decision, until Iguodla proved during the regular season that he could be worth that amount and more. Iguodala posted 19.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game through 82 games.

Then came the playoffs. The Pistons completely took Iguodala out of the series, which the Sixers lead 2-1 at one point. NBA people began to question if Iguodala could ever be the guy and reports have indicated that he is looking for a deal in the neighborhood of the six-year, $75 Million range. The Sixers and their fifth year swingman are currently at a stalemate.

My question, is he really worth the hassle? I say no.

Here is why I propose a sign-and-trade. First, Iguodala has never been able to create his own shot and with Elton Brand on board the team still needs a legitimate outside shooting threat. Secondly, Iguodala isn’t the outside shooting threat that this team needs and could be the perfect piece to land a three-point shooter the Sixers still desperately need.

Richard Hamilton has been mentioned, I would certainlytake a chance on his smooth perimeter game and big game leadership and shot-making ability. He is a free agent following the 2009 season, but if he doesn’t pan out Louis Williams may be ready to take on more minutes in 2010.

Phoenix has Raja Bell who can depart after next season and can shot the three and plays very good defense. The Sixers might even be interested in taking on Grant Hill in the deal and having another savvy veteran around.

Portland’s Brandon Roy is a restricted free agent, after the 2008 season and might be the kind of player the Sixers could use. While he is not a great three-point shooter, he is better then Iguodala and scores about 19 points per game.

Finally, Josh Howard from the Dallas Mavericks is an interesting idea. He doesn’t shoot the three, but he can score, rebound and do many of the things Iguodala can do at a much more comfortable cost.

According to reports, the Sixers are close to a $12 million per season deal. I think giving him that kind of money will be just as big as a mistake as all the other contracts given to many of his 2004 classmates this off season.

Nowhere to go but up for the Dolphins in ‘08.

“The kicking was a strength and that’s about it,” said Kevin Rogers of 790 The Ticket in Miami during a radio interview on “The Mike Gill Show” on ESPN Radio 1450, Atlantic City.

When that’s the first thing you can comment on when looking for positives in a football season, you know you have a long way to go.

Miami was awarded an expansion team back in 1965 and has been on of the better franchises along the way. However, in 2007, the Dolphins resembled their 1965 expansion team much more than the competitive team they have been in the great history, finishing with a pathetic 1-15 mark and finding little positives along the way.

So the team brought in Bill Parcells to help rebuild this once proud franchise and right away he began to make subtle changes almost immediately.

The Fins have been a strong defensive unit in the post-Marino years, led by names like Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. Parcells allowed both those veteran players to move on and now the defense must rely on Joey Porter to make plays on that side of the ball. Yeramiah Bell is an exciting player in the secondary according to Rogers but there isn’t much else to get excited about.

New coach Tony Sparano has named Josh McCown his starting quarterback…for now. He is competing with second year man John Beck and rookie Chad Henne. “If they can somehow get the quarterback situation figured out,” says Rogers, they have a good running game and could be okay offensivly.

The running game features Ronnie Brown who is coming back from major knee surgery and vagabond Ricky Williams who should see plenty of time in a reserve role. Williams as many know as been on quite the journey since his “retirement” from the NFL back in back in 2004. He has been to Canada and back to try and prove he can still play the game that made him fifth overall selection in the 1999 draft. Many people wonder if Williams can be counted on to help this Dolphins team. “People understand what he did, when he did it, said Rogers. “(Former head coach) Dave Wandstadt was running him into the ground.” So Ricky left and now he is back and according to Rogers looks “pretty impressive”.

Not many people will predict a playoff berth for the Dolphins but Rogers thinks they can win some of the close games they left slip away during last seasons 1-15 campaign and get to five-or-six wins this season.

Is this the Year the Cardinals Rise?

For each of the past few season, the Arizona Cardinals have been the off-season darlings of the NFL media. For the past few season they have disappointed. Like Big Brown faltering down the stretch at the Belmont, the Cardinals have vanished from the NFL playoff picture prematurely every year since 1998.

Since departing for the desert from St. Louis following the 1987 season the Cards have made exactly one playoff appearance. However a new stadium and big names on the offensive side of the ball have led to high expectations, something the team has failed to deliver. “I don’t see it right now,” said XTRA Sports 910 radio host Mike Jurecki, in an interview I conducted with him during my radio show (The Mike Gill Show, 3-6pm, ESPN Radio 1450, Atlantic City).

Offensively, the Cardinals have plenty of talent. With wide-receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald they may have the best stable of wide-outs in the NFL. The problem is, if they don’t win with this duo this season they may never be able to get it done.

Fitzgerald just signed a a four-year, $40 million contract extension with Arizona following a 100 receptions, 1,409 yard and 10 touchdowns last season.

As for Boldin, he has instructed his agent Drew Rosenhaus to cut of negotiations with the team and could be playing in a new uniform next season. “I can’t see them paying two wide-outs, $9-to-$10 million per season,” said Jurecki.

Add in quarterback Matt Leinhert and running back Edgerian James, and the Cards should be able to score points. “Edge hasn’t been the problem,” according to Jurecki. The Cards woeful offensive line has been. Meanwhile back to Leinhert, he gained some press clippings for the wrong reasons this off-season, appearing at a party with young co-eds was not the image the Cardinals were hoping for from their franchise quarterback. There is at least one person in Arizona who doesn’t think the former Trojan is a sure-bet to be under-center September 7th in San Francisco. According to Jurecki who spoke to Kurt Warner, who is currently the number two man in Arizona, “Kurt thinks it’s an open competition.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Adrian Wilson is having a great camp and is the leader of their underrated defense that according tro jurecki “will be improved.” Antrell Rolle is playing better, Bertrand Berry is a force and if Travis LaBoy can get some pressure on the quarterback, they might be pretty decent.

The Cardinals have a new stadium and a second year coach who is moving this team in the right direction, but unless they start winning on the field, the stands may again resemble their playing days at Sun Devil Stadium, when they were playing in front of plenty of empty seats. Is this a playoff team? Not according to Jurecki who is covering the team from it’s Flagstaff camp, “I think they can win nine games, but I wouldn’t say this is a playoff team.”

The Blog is Back

Sorry for the hibernation...the Blog is back!

Starting with the Phillies win today over the Brewers, Tom Gordon gets out of a bases loaded jam and Pat Burrel continues to hit, driving home the game-winning runs with a two RBI double.

Tonight the Flyers open their series with the Habs. Talked to Rick Moffatt who is the "voice of the Canadiens" he seems to think goaltending will be the difference with Carey Price over Marty Biron. Both teams have a lot of depth, with four-to-six guys who can score goals. Sup-plot here, Danny Briere was highly sought after during the offseason and will be public enemy number one in this series.

Sixers- Pistons Gm 2 re-cap

Sixers looked like they were happy to get a win in Detroit and get out tied 1-1. Its going to take a lot more then the effort they gave last night to upset the Pistons in this series. It all starts with Andre Igudola, he needs to "take over" a game like a superstar would. If he does, I will give him superstar status, until then, he is a pretty darn good player.

Eagles slap franchise tag on LJ Smith

The Eagles have slapped the franchise tag on TE LJ Smith. He is probably the best TE on the market but he didnt seem to be happy here last season.

But was he not happy due to the fact he was hurt or b/c he was on a one-year deal ? I think it was the latter, so what makes the Eagles think he is going to be any happier this season...beats me.

Smith is going to make some nice money this season, one year at 4.522 million - the average of the top-five TEs in the league - BUT...He could make more if he goes somewhere else. However, dont hold your breath he has been an underachiever his entire career and I cant see anyone taking a shot on him at more then that figure, Eagles fans we're stuck with LJ...again.

Philly things...February preview

Here are a few things that are on my mind as we end the month of January and start the month of February. Football is comign to an end and now is the time to really take notice of the Flyers. Baseball is just 14 days away and the Phillies vs. Mets debate is on. As for the Eagles, it draft season, we'll get into that as well. Finally, the Sixers are showing some signs of life and are actully in the playoff race.

Here are my thoughts:

Flyers - The Fly Boys have gone 12-2-1 since Christmas but a bad lose to the Rangers showed me what I have been saying all along - they need to play Marty Biron. If they are going to win a round in the playoffs, Biron is the man who can get them a playoff series win. Should the Flyers get Peter Forsberg is another question that has come up a bunch. He is an exceptional talent, but I dont think he is the difference in a playoff series win...the goalie is. In Hockey, a goalie is the like a baseball pitcher, they can win or lose you a series. Right now, I see them one and done.

Sixers - The Sixers are a team on the rise, with a couple of younger players that can actually play. Loius Williams and Thadeus Young are two guys worth watching. Jason Smith is the kind of player winning teams have, give Billy King some credit, both these guys can play andhe drafted them. Andre Miller is an interesting story. Is it worth keeping him to try to get into the playoffs next season and maybe even win a round - I think so. Andre Igoudala is another story, I like his game, but he needs another player to take the pressure off of him. We all know that so what kind of player is that? Unfortunalty, that player isnt out there this offseason in free agency. I dont see the Sixers making the playoffs, but they are making strides to even be in the race at this stage of the season.

Phillies - The Phillies or the Mets, that has been the debate the last few days since the Mets traded for Johana Santana and the Phillies added Pedro Feliz. At this point I still am leaning towards the Phils, but I do hope they add another piece to the puzzle. Kyle Loshe and Livan Hernandez are availble and would be a welcomed addition to the Phillies staff, lets just hope the Mets dont step in there and sign either one of them. As for Feliz, he seems to be happy to be here and is a nice addition to the team. He is a solid gold glove level third basemen and can hit for some power at CBP. Right now, I am leaning to the Phillies as division champs and Mets as the Wild-Card, but that can change.

Eagles - There are a lot of issues right now with the Birds, I am going to lead off with with draft. I am looking to add a D-End via the draft and right now I like Derrick Harvey from the University of Florida. He is a top level pass rusher from the SEC that I feel better about them Vernon Gholston and Chris Long. If its not a DE that is not obtained, I like WR DeShawn Jackson from CAL, Safety Reggie Smith from Oklahoma, RB, Felix Jones from Arkansas would be a nice addition to the return game and as a compliment to Brian Westbrook, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a sleeper I like from Tennessee State, he is CB who is really moving up some charts. The second thing I want to talk about with the Eagles is "playmakers". If Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb are asking, then they are needed. If just McNabb is asking, then maybe the team can say that he just is trying to fend off his own thoughts that he had a down year. But enter Westbrook (and to a lesser extent John Ruynan)and now the writing is on the wall - they need more playmakers.

Should be an interesting month of February, all sports are in play. College hoops is coming down the strecth, baseball has pitchers and catchers, Football begins draft and offseason rumors plus hockey as the playoffs coming into focus and this season the Flyers are part of it.

Well, since I was so off on my football picks, it made me start thinking about baseball. Got some thoughts I wanted to share with the readers of the blog spot about the all NL East team and some other baseball views...enjoy!

As I looked over the teams in the NL east to make this team, I found that I really am not that impressed with the divison. Six Phillies made the team and there could have been some more.

Here are some thoughts...

Close battles at SS, with Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramirez. Rollins gets the call as the league MVP, I ranked them Rollins, Ramirez, Reyes.

Close battle at 3B - Dave Wright edges out Ryan Zimmerman and Chipper Jones

Close battle at Closer - I think Lidge can have a real good year but I give the edge to Wagner till I see what he does.

I think top to bottom right now, the Phillies have the bets team in the divison. With 3 legit MVP canidates and a Cy Young award canidate. They have the best the core in the divison.

Pitchers and Catchers are almost here...

My Pick....NFC/AFC title games

Well, I had a few minutes before I went on the air and figured if you are one of the people who check the blog you could see my picks here first.

NFC Title game NYG at Green Bay

I like the Packers plain and simple I think they are the better team. The G-Men are out-of-gas and I think Ryan Grant is the difference. Brett Favre will make a big play and their D is underrated. I think Eli makes a mistake and Jacbos has a huge game but for the Giants to score 24 points, thats asking alot in this weather in this stadium vs this team

The Pick : Packers 31 - Giants 20

AFC Title Game Chargers at Patriots

I think this is a laugher. Pats are healthy and SD simply is not. Much like the Giants I think they might have used all their get out of jail free cards alredy. I think the Pats can ru it and pass it on the Bolts and dont be surprised if they toy with them for most of the first half. San Diego would have a shot if they were 100% healthy...but LT, Gates and Rivers limited means no shot for the Chargers. LT plays, Gates and Rivers...doubtful

Sixers Struggling...Bad

While the Sixers were a decent little feel food story for a few weeks there, but they are quickly falling from any playoff talk.

Consider they have lost five games in a row with San Antonio, Houston (a team they beat) and Boston on the road this week. No easy task.

At 14-23 the Sixers are 37 games into the season and getting to the 35 wins they had in 2006-2007 might be a challenge now that they are not up for.

Here is a quick breakdown of the roster and what could be in its place next season.

Point Guard - Andre Miller, Louis Williams and Kevin Ollie - Miller played extremely well during the Sixers sting of solid play. However, he alone can not help this team win. I still think Miller will be here next season, unless Stafanski gets his socks blown off. No team with a decent enough draft pick or expiring contract in the playoff hunt can help the Sixers, so I think he stays. Williams is exciting, but doesn't have a true position and he isn't ready to be a true point guard. Ollie is taking up space on the bench and must be a nice practice player.

Shooting Guard - Willie Green, Gordan Giricek - Green would be a nice player to come off the bench, but Cheeks is kind of forced to start him. He could be a poor mans Vinne Johnson, scoring in bunches off the bench but the Sixers are playing him to many minutes and he just isn't a starter in this league on a team that is a playoff team. If the Sixers could trade him for something similar that they got for Korver they would jump at it. Giricek is gone after this season.

Small Forward - Andre Iguodala, Rodney Carney, Thaddeus Young - Iguodala isn't playing like a guy who deserves a max contract. His numbers overall are good, but not good enough to lead this team to the playoffs. Iguodala is a nice player, not a max player. His defense isn't as good as it once was and he needs to be more aggressive. Carney has had an up-and-down season, but mostly down. He was buried, then started and now is buried again, to the point he was inactive verse Denver last week. I was never a fan of Carney to begin with, but he could have some value somewhere else, he was a former first round pick but dint expect much in return if he is dealt. As for Young, he looks like he could be a player. He is Young and talented and Mo is starting to use him more and more and he is responding. Overall, I think he is going to be a nice player in this league and could potentially be a starting player by seasons end.

Power Forward - Reggie Evans, Jason Smith, Louis Amundson - Evans is a bruising re bounder, but he is a back-up in this league. The Sixers are desperate for a scoring presence in the post and none of the power forwards on this team can provide that. Smith is definitely a nice role player coming off the bench in this league, but isn't the low scoring threat they need. Amundson is a journeymen at best.

Center - Samuel Dalembert, Calvin Booth - Samuel just isn't a fan favorite but he is having a pretty solid season. If he had a low post scoring presence next to him he might be able to take off. He might even be named to the all-star team this season due to his rebounding and blocked shots. Booth was signed to a pretty big deal this off season but really hasn't contributed much of anything.

Coach - Mo Cheeks - Cheeks is going to be the fall guy here at seasons end, he is going to be gone. Stanfanski will bring in his own guy but Cheeks is coaching as if he has a shot to get the job next season at the expense of guys like Young, Smith, Williams and Carney. I think Cheeks has done an OK job of keeping the ship from completly sinking but they still might not surpass last years win total.

GM - Ed Stafanski - The new GM traded Kyle Korver away to clear cap space and I am sure he has some other moves up his sleeve this season. There isn't a whole lot of attractive names on the free agent market but two that are available are Josh Smith of Atlanta and Elton Brand from the Clippers who is out til March with an Achilles injury. Maybe he will trade Miller maybe he wont, I think the deal will have to blow him over. Keep in mind, Miller had a contact for next season and the Sixers can trade him next year if need be. So far I think the culture has changed in the Sixers locker room, but the players at this point just aren't good enough. If they can get a big free agent to come here this summer they can get to the playoffs next season and if they make the right moves in this draft and during next summers free agent period they can be a player in the East in 2 years.

The 2008 Phillies

Well, the Eagles finished the season at 8-8, so its the Phillies the are now the talk of the town. The 2007 defending NL East Champs will be most pundits favorites to win it again, but that would be enough for the demanding Philly fan base and media. Here is my early look at the 2008 season full with predictions on each player and their role.

Line-Up

1. SS Jimmy Rollins - .284, 25 HR, 85 RBI, 30 SB
2. CF Shane Victorino - .276, 15 HR, 64 RBI, 20 SB
3. 2B Chase Utley - .340, 30 HR, 125 RBI, 12 SB
4. 1B Ryan Howard - .285, 50 HR, 135 RBI
5. LF Pat Burrell - .274, 32 HR, 110 RBI
6. RF Geoff Jenkins - .255, 25 HR, 73 RBI
7. 3B Wes Helms - .265, 17 HR, 55 RBI
8. C Carlos Ruiz - .255, 9 HR, 52 RBI

The line-up is one of the best in baseball from 1-8 this is a real sloid order. With three porential MVP's at the top of the line-up, speed and power from the right and left sdie, this line-up could produc more runs then the 07 team.

Grade - A

Bench

3B/OF - Greg Dobbs - .260, 12 HR, 40 RBI
3B/OF - Eric Bruntlett - .255, 4 HR, 22 RBI
OF - So Taguchi - .289, 5 HR, 27 RBI
OF - Jason Werth - .270, 12 HR, 40 RBI
C - Chris Coste - .290, 6 HR, 33 RBI

This bench is deeper and better then last season. The additin of Taguchi helps the OF depth and Bruntlett can play multiple positions. Dobbs is also a versitle role player who will see alot of time at 3B this year. Jason Werth will split time in RF with G. Jenkins to form a solid R/L tandem. Chris Coste is a solid reserve at catcher.

Grade - B

1. Cole Hammels - 18-7, 3.66 ERA
2. Brett Myerys - 15-9, 4.45 ERA
3. Kyle Kendirck - 10-11, 4.77

the rotation is helped by the return of Myers, but I was never all that impress with him as a starter in the past. He is however, an upgrade to anyone they trotted out there every fifth game last season. Kendrick is a major wild card, who knows if he can duplicate his solid 2007. If Eaton can get back on track that should help a staff that has a legitimate ace and solid veteren in Hammels and Moyer.

I think this pen is simialr to last years edtion, with Lidge closing games out instead of Myers. Romero will play more of an important role then last season and the Phillies will need to hope that Gordon stays healthy for more of this season then last. Chad Durbin is a nice veteren pressence and Ryan Madsen is back to pitch the 6-7 innings. Overall, I think this pen will be better then last year, but
health is the key.
